“Scottish Spirit... Indian Soul”

Our Story:

In 1940 British India, a man named Tej Ram Bawa met a Scottish officer from Kilmarnock, stationed in the city of Dibrugarh, Assam. Despite language barriers, both men shared a common passion... for making moonshine. Thus their weekend adventures led to filling a gap in the market.
Single malt whisky was not accessible to the common man, as it was the rich man’s drink. The Scottish friend procured single malt whisky from the officer’s mess, and they both blended it with the malt they created together and sold it to the common man as Indian Blended Scotch. This led to an enterprise that solved a problem without breaking the law and created a unique link between Scotland and India, which still exists today.

Today:

In 2016, I travelled to a family funeral in Assam. It was during this time, I learned about the story of my family roots and connections, making me realise, I wanted to rekindle my great-grandfather’s legacy. Using tea from Assamese tea estates, I embarked on a similar journey my great grandfather once did, and Rutland Square Gin was born.
